Mayor's Message on COVID-19 Virus to the citizens of the City of Port Orange

Hello everyone.

I wanted to address the current issue of the COVID-19 pandemic to let everyone know that we’re making difficult decisions right now as a city government that affect our community to preserve what we value most, each other. We don’t take these decisions lightly, knowing the deep impacts they have on our residents and businesses, but we are prioritizing what is necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives.

Public health is our top priority and we know that gathering in groups can put lives at risk. We continue to receive numerous questions about mandating business closures. While we don’t want to create additional financial hardships on our businesses and their valued employees by imposing additional restrictions and closures, we will continue to look for guidance from State and Federal governments for direction, and we will follow that direction, if they deem that additional regulations or closures are considered necessary.

Right now, I am asking that our business owners and business community overall come together to continue to take proactive measures in how you operate to encourage social distancing in your operations. This, along with added and needed steps to ensure a sanitary environment and a compassionate approach to your employees, we realize the enormous commitment you are making to our community. I am also asking that our residents be patient and selfless as we all continue to follow the guidelines spelled out by the CDC for our battle against COVID-19. This is what it will take for us to continue to function. I know from my experience and years in this community living with you all, that it can be done.

Our immediate goal is to stop the spread of this virus, and it will take all of us doing our part to protect each other and make this happen.

I know that I can count on you! For that, you have my deepest gratitude.
