The Animal Control Unit responds to incidents involving animals, enforces the animal control ordinances of the City of Port Orange and investigate allegations of criminal violations in Florida State Statutes. The Animal Control Unit also administers the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. Animal Control officers are not sworn officers and have no arrest powers, but are authorized to complete complaint affidavits, which are criminal violations. Animal Control officers also issue Animal Enforcement Forms (AEF’s) for City ordinance violations, which are civil infractions. The Animal Control officers are equipped with microchip readers to assist them in reuniting lost pets with their owners, as well as infrared thermometers to verify the temperature of vehicles when responding to calls about pets left inside vehicles.
