PROGRAMS
This section of the Port Orange Police Department
website is designed to provide citizens with information concerning topics
relating to various programs that the Department has established. The following topics contained in
this area and a brief description about what information can be found within are
as follows:
Child Safety:
Would your child know what to do if he/she got lost at a shopping mall? Or a nice, friendly stranger offered her a ride home after
school? What if a babysitter wanted to play a secret game that no one would
know about? Or a friend dared him to hitchhike? This area provides tips on
how to teach your child the answers.
Accreditation: The Port Orange Police Department has
been a state accredited agency through the Commission for Florida Law
Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) since 1997. This area provides information
on what accreditation is, why we are involved in the program, and how the
Department has performed on its two (2) on-site inspections.
Crime Prevention: The Department's crime
prevention efforts are designed to enhance public safety awareness and crime
prevention through education, environmental design, and enforcement. The local
residential and business communities are educated about crime prevention and
police department services through activities that include safety information,
exhibition tables, the city's website, presentations, workshops, and security
surveys.
Volunteers (VIPs):
The Volunteers in Police Service are a group of approximately 55 dedicated
volunteers who supplement the Department's paid staff by performing duties such
as traffic control, fingerprinting, vacation house watches, and courier
services. The program is perfect for retired individuals who want to remain
active and participate in their community. This area provides more details on
our VIPS program and how to become part of the team.
Buckle-Up Campaign:
On America's roads, someone is
killed every 13 minutes and someone is injured every nine seconds in traffic
crashes. The Port Orange Police Department actively participates in
the Buckle-Up America campaign sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. This area provides more information on the campaign, including a
39 page report issued by NHTSA entitled Standard
Enforcement Saves Lives: The Case for Strong Seat Belt Laws. You can also
get details on how to get your child restraint seat inspected. A recent study
indicates that at least 90 percent of all child safety seats are not installed
properly, potentially increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Neighborhood Watch:
Provides information on the program, why it is needed, the goals of the program,
and how to get one organized. Tips can also be found on different types of
suspicious activities which should be monitored and reported as a part of the
program.
Vacation House Watch: Offered as a
service by the Volunteers in Police Service, this program
permits city residents to request extra patrols of their residence while away on
vacation, up to 90 days. Patrols are not guaranteed.
Citizens Police Academy: The Citizens
Police Academy is a training program for residents of the City of Port Orange to
familiarize them with the operation of the Port Orange Police Department.
Police Athletic League:
Provides information concerning various sports programs run by the Port Orange
Police Athletic League for children ages 8-18, including weight lifting, boxing,
baseball, basketball, bowling, and soccer. The quarterly newsletter is available
for viewing, and the PAL membership application can be downloaded.
Explorer Post #445:
The
mission of the Port Orange Police Explorers is to provide in-depth, first hand
experience into the fields of law enforcement and the criminal justice system
for young men and women ages 14 to 21. This area provides information about the
Explorers and a contact number for individuals wanting additional information.
Skateboard Park:
The
Port Orange Parks and Recreation department opened its new skateboard park on
August 7th, 2001. The park is located behind the city gym in City Center Park,
open to children and adults of all ages. This area provides information on park
rules and regulations.
Driver Safety Program: The AARP Driver
Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement
course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help
older drivers improve their skills while teaching them to avoid accidents and
traffic violations. For more information, call 1-888-AARP-NOW or visit their web
site.
