Right after Hurricane Charley passed through our community, City crews were out clearing and assessing damage from the storm. Public Works and Public Utilities crews went right to work around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning August 14 clearing roads and checking the water and sewer systems. Police and Fire units were right behind them checking neighborhoods and putting up temporary stop signs where traffic lights were out.

Early estimates on the debris totals was roughly 10 million tons. Nearly a week into the debris removal process, that number seems to be correct. The following is a collection of photos of City crews working and damage in the neighborhoods.

Chris Barnes demonstrates his strength and the Menzi Muck gets to work.

The Emergency Operations Center is busy as Emergency Management staff discuss what areas of Port Orange were hit the hardest and Bob Newell and Stella Gurnee get updates on events occurring in the community off the EOC computer system.

Sgt. Jim Jabluszewski types in a downed tree call into the EOC computer messaging system and a message from a resident that Charley did not listen to.

The Sleepy Hollow neighborhood had its share of high winds, which downed several trees and ripped shingles off roofs.
